February 2017: Al Slouf

We would like to introduce you to Ali. Ali came to join the Monroe Veterinary Family as a patient in 2011, although joining the Slouf family 20 years ago. The family picked out a beautiful brown and tan tabby kitty from their local animal control in Illinois, upon adoption they were told that this kitty was female and was found in an ally, hence the name that the Slouf’s daughter choose for her, Ali.

In the following days the Slouf’s took Ail for her first Veterinary appointment. Much to their surprise they found out that Ali, was really a boy so they changed his name to Al because it was more manly and because he was found in the ally. Al loves his family so much that he greats them each day when they come home, “you can’t help but smile at him” said Mrs. Slouf. She also stated that “he is very entertaining” and definitely has his quirks. “He talks, A LOT. He tells us when he is ready to eat and makes odd meowing sounds when he is ready for a nap or bed time.”

Once the family moved to Monroe they began to notice that Al was not himself and had some weight loss. That is when we met Al and his family. Al was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, sever dental and kidney disease. Al’s parents were very worried about him and the potential outcomes with his diagnosis and made the choice to try and improve his quality of life for as long as possible. We informed Al’s family how important a dental procedure would be for Al’s health, as well as providing him with a special diet to address his thyroid and kidney disease. Since the diagnosis Al comes to see his girlfriends at MVC and to have his fluids three times a week, to help maintain his progressing kidney disease.

Over the years we have grown to love Al, and his family. We were recently told by his Mom that Al “is very thankful for all of his friends at MVC for taking such good care of him so that he can share a good quality of life with his family a little while longer.”
